Chevrolet has been telling anyone listening that its hardest-core Camaro, the Z/28, is a track-bred beast—essentially a Corvette Z06 with a back seat. Its wild aerodynamics package, 7.0-liter V-8 from the last-gen Z06, and aggressive weight-loss regimen—not to mention our track ride in a Z/28—have us convinced of the road car’s chops. But the original Z/28′s raison d’ĂȘtre was wheel-to-wheel competition, and it wouldn’t be right if the new one didn’t murder apexes in anger, so Chevy has announced the Z/28.R racer.

The Z/28.R’s name follows the same nomenclature pattern set down by Corvette race cars, the latest of which is the C7.R. Like the C7.R, the racing Z/28 has a cozy relationship with its production counterpart, having been developed alongside. As such, the Z/28.R’s aerodynamics package is shared with the 2014 Z/28, and the race car also uses the production car’s 7.0-liter LS7 V-8 and helical limited-slip rear differential. In fact, Chevrolet (and Stevenson Motorsports and CKS Autosport, who will campaign the Z/28.R) says the only major changes made to the Z/28 for racing duty were the installation of “series-mandated equipment” and “specialized suspension components needed for endurance racing.”

The beastliest Camaro will duke it out in the GS class of the IMSA Continental Tires SportsCar Challenge. Its first race will be the 2.5-hour Daytona Rising 200 enduro this Friday, which is being run ahead of Saturday’s start to the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Of course, if watching the Z/28.R circle a track isn’t exciting enough, you can always gather up $75,000 and buy a regular Z/28 of your own.
